Fighting Radical Islamic Terrorists

As you can tell from my posts I am not a fan of the Bush Administration. However, I support President Bush's decision to allow Israel to continue its operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel's fight against Hezbollah is just one more battle in the war against radical Islamic terrorists. Lest we forget, it was Hezbollah who blew up the American Embassy in Beirut in 1982 and killed over 250 of our Marines. Al Qaida, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, the groups operating in Iraq, the terrorists who blew up trains in India, and others must be dealt with swiftly and harshly. You cannot negotiate with people who are not only not afraid to die but think that blowing themselves up is an express ticket to heaven. The United States, Israel and other western nations must defeat the radical Islamic terrorists now before things get out of control. We also must let the Muslim nations of the world know that they cannot have it both ways. They must stop supporting the terrorists by giving them money and safe haven. In this case, the principle "if you are not part of the solution you are are part of the problem" applies. The No. 2 leader of Al Qaida, al- Zawahri said "It is a jihad (holy war) for the sake of God and will last until (our) religion prevails ... from Spain to Iraq." I think we have to take this type of rhetoric seriously. Otherwise, we could be headed down a similar road as when the European countries did not take Hitler seriously in the 1930s.

The problem as I see it is that we are facing a hydra of sorts. Each time we remove a septic head from this Islamic Extremist beast, another one sprouts anew. And how do we combat this? It is such a daunting task. Surely not with military might alone. You cannot shock and awe an enemy that WANTS to die. An enemy for which death is more precious and more inviting that life. Hezbollah and Hamas and organizations like them are very smart. They provide basic human needs and goods to the very people they exploit. They set up schools and "educate" children with their hate dotrines. These young victims have little choice other than to mimic what they've been told. This is all they're taught. So again, how do we combat this? We have to get into these communities and schools with the same grassroots efforts that the extremist employ. I really think education and charity are the best roads to peace. After all, what do these people know of the "Great Satan" other than what they are told, the sounds and sites of the bombs they hear, and the lopsided "news stories" they see?

I agree that if we can somehow reach the children in these countries the possibility of peace or at least peaceful coexistence might be greater. I know that there are programs where, for example, Jewish and Arab children get together and try to understand each other. My understanding is that these programs do work because your supposed enemy now has a face, feelings and maybe even similar interests. I think it would be a daunting task to do this on a large scale. I also think there are many people who want to perpetuate the hate because they benefit from it politically, financially or otherwise.
